Wormholes are cosmic tunnels that can connect two distant
regions of the universe, and have been popularized by theoretical physics and
sci-fi movies like the award winning Interstellar.
Using present day technology to create this cosmic bubbles
have been impossible since it requires so much gravity which no one knows how
to produce. The advancement of metamaterials on electromagnetism has made
researchers move forward in making advancements.
The first laboratory wormhole was created in Universitat
Autonoma de Bercelona by the Physics department. It can connect two regions of
space magnetically. This consists of a tunnel that transfers the magnetic field
from one point to the other while keeping it undetectable……invisible all way
through. So thanks to this team showing as wormholes are no longer theoretical hence
we can travel to galaxies far far away like star wars……
The researchers used metamaterials to build the tunnel
experimentally, so that the magnetic field from the material, such as an
electromagnet, appears at the other end of the wormhole. This result is strange
enough in itself, as magnetic monopole…..magnet with only one pole……which as
far as we are concerned doesn’t exist in nature. The overall effect is that of
a magnetic field that appears to travel from one point to another through a
dimension that lies outside the conventional three dimensions.
The wormhole in this experiment is a sphere made of different
layers; an external layer with a ferromagnetic surface, a second layer, made of
superconducting material and a ferromagnetic sheet rolled into cylinder that
crosses from one end to another. The sphere is made in such a way that it is
invisible, in magnetic field terms.
The magnetic wormhole is an analogy of gravitational ones,
as it changes the topology of space, as the inner surface has been magnetically
erased from space…..which is bizarre….
This means a step forward towards possible applications in
which magnetic fields are used. Like in medicine, the MRI images.
